Vector Space Robotics

Team 10257

A First Robotics Competition team in Lynchburg, Virginia.

A passion for making

As an FRC team, the goals of Vector Space Robotics Team 10257 take inspiration from both founding organizations: FIRST and Vector Space. As a community team hosted at a makerspace, Team 10257 has the opportunity and therefore the responsibility to contribute to the FRC knowledgebase. Our team is founded on the shoulders of teams and makers that have come before, and our duty is to pave the way to new and innovative robotics ideas, techniques, or approaches to problem solving. Each year students should prioritize not only the completion of a successful team robot, but a contribution to the larger FIRST and/or maker communities.

Makers before Engineers

FRC presents a wealth of engineering challenges, and it’s no surprise that many consider it a nursery for aspiring engineers. While we wouldn’t disagree and certainly welcome these aspirations, Vector Space prioritizes its goal to make makers before anything else. Makers are creative problem solvers, equipped with a variety of skills, a willingness to learn more, and the ability to create the ideas they generate.

Open Source

Open source software represents the future we want to live in. We chose open source as long as it is not overly burdensome. We know that proprietary software may be “better”, but we are not interested in “better. We know that proprietary software may be “cheaper”, but we are not interested in “cheaper”. We are interested in the spirit of broad access, of the ability to look under the hood, learn from what you find and seize the invitation to grab a wrench and start turning. Open Source software presents an opportunity to leave a legacy; here you can make contributions that last.

High Quality

Things of high quality are robust but not bulky, they are effective and long lasting. Things of high quality are not made on the first attempt, yet a first attempt must be made. Quality grows through careful thought, iteration, and work.
